Introduction

What follows is a transcription of the original "History of Center Compound Stalag Luft III, Sagan, Germany" which was digitally photographed at the United States Air Force Academy's Clarke Collection, in February of 2008.

All errors have been included (followed by the requisite sic) in order to remain as true as possible to the original text.  (Any other typos can be attributed to me, the transcriber, Sally McLaughlin!)

My particular interest in the project stems from the fact that my father, Dr. David F. Wolter, was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III from July 1, 1944 until the evacuation on January 27 1945.  After the forced march from Sagan to Moosburg, Germany he was a POW at Stalag 7A until that camp was liberated on April 29, 1945 by General George H. Patton and his Third Army.  Both the march and the days in Moosburg are also covered in the history transcribed here.

  2. Hi Sally - my name is Jim Keeffe III and my father, James Keeffe Jr, was in the same block 43 as your father in Center Compound. I wrote about your father in my book, 'Two Gold Coins and a Prayer:The Epic Journey of a World War II Bomber Pilot, Evader, and POW'. Let me know if there is a way I may contact you. Cheers - Jim
